Planning saves money

Having Loxone, KNX, or another professional automation system doesn’t automatically make your home truly smart. The system is just a tool – without a proper plan, even the best hardware can end up being completely useless.

📌 Real-world case: A smart home with an expensive system – but no real benefit

At first glance, everything looks great: a house equipped with a Loxone Miniserver, a distribution board full of modules capable of controlling all sorts of things.

But when we take a closer look:

  • the electric heaters have standalone digital thermostats that reset every time the power is cut
  • the window blinds and shutters are controlled by a radio remote and cannot be integrated
  • there’s no space left in the distribution board for contactors needed to control additional essential components
  • there’s no structured cabling throughout the house – only Wi-Fi

The result? The system is expensive but can’t control what it should. And any modifications are time-consuming, costly, and often impossible without tearing into the walls.

🔍 What was missing? A plan that addressed the real needs

The problem wasn’t the technology itself, but the fact that no one addressed:

  • what the house actually needs to do
  • which devices will be connected
  • what kind of future expansion should be planned for
  • how control and maintenance will be handled

💸 How much does it all cost?

  • tens of thousands spent on devices that are either unused or poorly integrated
  • lost comfort – modes don’t work, scenes can’t be switched
  • the need for modifications after moving in
  • user frustration

🧭 How can you avoid this?

It’s simple – start with the design. Not with choosing the technology, but with defining the functionality:

  • What do I want to control – and why?
  • How should it work on a weekday? On weekends? When I'm not at home?
  • How will manual control work – when guests come over, or if the internet goes down?
  • What features do I want now – and which ones in a year or five years?

A smart home isn’t about how much it can do — but about what it does on its own, without needing you to think about it.
